LEAP Schoolhouse Curriculum Review - Spider Story again !

I am not at all impressed that the same story was repeated again although the follow up activities are different. Perhaps for 2 weeks but consecutively 3 weeks! Is it because they do not have enough students to make up a class and since there are only 2 regular students (yx and the other gal) while the others are just on a trial class so they thought it is ok to repeat the story again ?!


  • 28 April - The Itsy Bitsy Spider - Story telling format: Singing (the Itsy Bitsy Spider song)
Activity:
Colour the spider webs using crayons

  • 5 May -  The Eensy Weensy Spider -  Story telling format: Reading out loud to the song

Activity: 
Search for spiders on the worksheet and circle them using red paint.
Use paint to draw spider webs.
  • 12 May - The Itsy Bitsy Spider - Story telling format: Singing (same as 28 April but discontinued halfway - maybe she found her 2 regular toddlers were restless?)

Activity: 
Abstract - dip marbles in black paint and then drop the marbles onto box filled with a piece of paper.
Move the box so that the marbles will roll around to create strands which look like a spider web.

I was actually looking forward to their advance enrichment classes when yx is 3 years old. It seems like I need to adjust my expectations of the school and see how things goes. The only consolation is that yx is quite interested in the abstract activity. Perhaps she already knew the song (I sang this to her since she was like 3 mths old?) and that she has done the colouring /painting in the previous weeks.

So what's for next week? Revert to reading out loud to the song and activity is er, maybe draw a spider using paint? hmm.

    Do you think the class is fun and interesting for children? My boy is 20 months as well. Actually has been joining a class, but seems like he doesn't enjoy and avoid to attend the class..

    How much do you pay for the class? How about teacher-student ratio?

      perhaps your boy has already experienced what has been taught in the class and so find it boring since it is kindda repetitive to him? or he doesn't like the teacher ?

      (for the 5th and 6th session, i didn't attend as I was resting at home as it was really near my delivery date.)

      I can't remember the exact amount, about 300+ for 6 sessions.

      Teacher-student ratio on average is about 1:4.
      But i understand from the school last time that the ratio can go up to 1:8. You may wish to call the school to double confirm.

    I am Esther, founder of LEAP Schoolhouse and I would like to first thank you for enrolling your little darling into our programme.

    I have read your blog and would like to take the opportunity to share with you the fundamental philosophy that encapsulates the literature-based approach that we adopt at LEAP.

    Yes, literature used for the lessons are repeated and it is meant to be because children thrive on familiarity. Confidence on being able to connect with the book in print through questioning and showing the same print cues in the book allows for the child to be able to cognitively have the opportunity to synthesize and capture the essence of the story.

    I do stand on your end, to nod, that too much familiarity does trigger 'boredom' and so I am so glad that you agree to the use of the different activities (that we use) in the classrooms to consolidate learning experiences. Many a times, the lessons, with its repetition in the literature used, will see it changed after a maximum of 3 reads. In a term, we also do no less than 3-4 books, exploring with the child, every time, a different concept/skill ( even if it is the week where the book is re-read).

    The classes are running at 1:8 at maximum but for children of a younger age band, the smaller the classes, the more opportunities to actually establish more intimate and interactive moments with the teacher.

    The lessons in the programmes offered at our school are all gradated in difficulty and as your little darling progresses with the school, they will be able to look forward to more activities that will challenge them at the appropriate level.

      Thank you for your comments, I am surprised that you actually managed to stumbled upon my blog and the fact that you make an effort to reply to my feedback actually speaks volume of the school's commitment to ensure parental engagement and high performance.

      I have been experimenting different techniques in various format on the same subject with the kids after my confinement and it is fascinating to see them respond differently. It is quite a challenge to avoid having too much familiarity while trying to ensure novelty but it has been a wonderful learning experience for me.
